Creating My Self

This poem is inspired by the banner on Life’s Fine Whine.

I’m creating myself today
With some scraps and threads;
Things I almost threw away;
An old garment in tatters and shreds.

The bits of thread are hopes and dreams
Saved for quite a while;
Memories of ideas and schemes;
So many of them just make me smile.

It’s good I kept all the treasures;
That truly is wise;
Though subtle, they bring such pleasure,
Even when they come in a disguise.

Though tattered, garments are so warm,
Filled with feelings dear;
Like patches in a quilt they form
Parts of my self so precious and clear.

Tomorrow I will start again
To build one called me;
To make this self my very best friend;
A new creation I’ll ever be!

I RESOLVE

I resolve to love myself,
No matter how others regard me;
To be truthful and honest;
Live with integrity.

I resolve to live and grow
Knowing I have a full life ahead;
I look for the promises,
For by them I am fed.

I resolve to grant others
The dignity of their own living;
While retaining my power
Of love and forgiving.

I know that it’s important
For people to build identity
That’s unique and respectful,
Of who we’re meant to be.

WHAT DO YOU GET

What do you get when you start with a dream,
Add a little hope and prayer;
Then share with a friend who helps you to see;
The possibilities there?

What do you get when you find your own heart,
Honoring and loving your soul?
AS you pour into others you will start
To realize you’re truly whole.

What do you get when permission is yours
To learn and grow each day?
To accept achievements along with errors;
To stumble along the way?

You get life that’s evolving and complete;
Clear while being unveiled;
You get your own way of expression so sweet,
That’s unique to your life’s tale.

MY SOUL

My soul wears like a tunic over leggings:
Soft, flexible and vivacious
With a touch of lace for a pretty, feminine touch.

I’m gently colored with blue, purple and pink;
Subtle, interesting and striking
With a sprinkle of bling for joyful celebration.

My music is filled with delicate tones and harmonies;
Simple yet sophisticated;
An intricate expression of feelings, thoughts and dreams.

My story is made of intriguing mysteries and tales
Often told in poetic form;
Old and complete while it unfolds and grows even more.

I am learning to wear my soul comfortably;
Established and discovering;
The one who is so like others yet so uniquely me.

DISCOVERY

Dreams I never imagined;
Insights that help to enlighten.
Sensations of thought and emotion;
Coming from new life within.
Overcoming doubts and fear;
Viewing life and myself in fresh ways.
Ever stronger and happier;
Resilient and whole;
Younger at heart than ever before.

COURAGE TO BE YOURSELF

Something that seems so simple; yet is terrifically hard to do is to be yourself.
You know all the thoughts:
“I’m a misfit; an alien.”
“What if others….”
“My ______ (fill in the blank:  husband, wife, friend…) thinks I should….”
“What if I make a mistake!”
Then there are the inward experiences that generally don’t have words, such as confusion or “the dead zone,” where no feelings exist.
There’s also this:  Each of us is on a life-long journey and we are not so easily defined.
Fear, uncertainty, mistakes, sometimes lack of direction and feeling lost all come to play in our becoming whole.
A necessary ingredient, therefore, is courage.
Surprised?
I like what Steve Jobs said:
“Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.”
That’s a good one!
