Highways might get you to your destination sooner, but you will get to see more scenery if you travel on a winding road.
When you discover
The journey isn’t over,
It’s meant to last a lifetime.
Shortcuts might seem nice,
However, there’s such a price;
You really have a lifetime.
When it seems so long;
You feel far more weak than strong;
Your strength will last a lifetime.
When you finally see
The whole point is the journey;
It is yours for a lifetime.
Dark with sorrow;
Turbulent and cold;
Torn apart by winds
Of painful memories old.
In bittersweet pain;
Wounds are cleansed and healed;
We start to live again.
Come on breezes fair;
Bringing in fresh hope
And treasures we can share.
Giving way to light;
Souls wake from slumber
To warmth and feelings bright.
Storms come and go;
They’re not meant to stay;
Like clouds in sunshine,
May old hurts melt away.
It isn’t that we have never been afraid; never worried or thought that we would most certainly die. We experienced all of that as we walked through the fiery hell of abuse, drugs, alcohol, eating disorders and trauma. That is what courage is for.
Now that we are on the healthy road, the one that leads to greater wellness, we face new challenges: Old monsters that rattle their cages, demanding our attention; sobriety’s call to a completely new lifestyle; pain that was so neatly medicated and tucked away; new truth that requires us to lay down old lies and beliefs, even when their replacements are not clear. This too, is what courage is for.
As we face the hard things in life, we meet two other companions: Strength and Wisdom. These can only be developed as we persevere.
May Courage be your most constant friend,
Along with Strength and Wisdom.
Keep these three close, and in the end;
You’ll smile at life well done!
Hiding, calling, nagging,
Stories, riddles, mysteries, illusions
Forming, enticing, intriguing
I used to dream exquisitely
About the possibilities;
I had no thought of how or why;
I simply reached to touch the sky.
Then somehow, my dreaming died.
I could not find visions inside
Nor imaginative desire;
No enthusiasm or fire.
Where could I find my inward song;
That force that feeds and keeps me strong?
I asked and searched in every place;
Worked hard and joined in every race.
But dreaming just eluded me
Until I couldn’t feel or see.
I found it hard to check within;
I had no sense of where I’d been.
But as I’ve healed and found my heart,
My song begins and visions start
To rise and swell in harmony,
Like blood and breath that flow through me.
Now it seems I’m dreaming again;
Possibility is my friend,
As my soul begins to declare
All of the secrets hidden there.
This is a new day,
Filled with fresh ideas,
Hopeful plans and dreams.
Yesterday is done;
It has now grown cold,
With its hurts and pains,
Blessings, smiles and gains.
I’ll fold yesterday
Put it in a drawer,
Tell the good stories,
Forgive all the rest,
Recall the glories.
Today, I will build
And sow healthy seed,
With promises bright,
So that tomorrow
Brings blessings and light.
